What is Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy)?

Breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that reshapes and raises sagging breasts. Breast lift surgery is sometimes combined with breast implants to increase volume and firmness of the breasts.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

When considering breast lift surgery, begin the process with a consultation with Dr. Bounds. He will assess your overall health and the size, shape, and symmetry of your breasts and determine a course of action to achieve the results you seek. You are a good candidate for breast lift surgery if:

  • Your breasts have lost shape or volume and are sagging
  • You are in good health and maintain a stable weight
  • You are a non-smoker
  • Your breasts are not the same shape or size, or one breast is lower than the other
  • Your breasts appear flat and somewhat elongated
  • You have stretched skin and/or enlarged areolas

Thousands of women undergo breast lift surgery and are delighted with the results that lift, firm and shape their breasts, giving them greater self-confidence and a sense of overall well-being.

The Breast Lift Surgery Procedure

Dr. Bounds performs breast lift surgery on an outpatient basis in his in-office surgical suite. The surgery usually lasts two to four hours, after which a registered nurse will attend to you as you awaken in the recovery room.

After you are fully awake and Dr. Bounds is satisfied that you are comfortable, you will be released to go home with a relative or trusted friend.

Recovery from Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy)

In most cases, you will be able to return to work within four to seven days. Strenuous exercise will be limited for two to four weeks depending on your comfort level and the results from your follow-up consultation. Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive salt intake to minimize swelling. Light exercise, such as walking, is recommended.

Breast Lift FAQs

What Causes Breast Ptosis (Drooping)?

Mastopexy Virginia Beach, VABreast ptosis, or drooping breasts, is commonly caused by significant weight loss, pregnancy, macromastia (large breasts) and hormonal fluctuations. All breast sizes can experience breast sagging, which may worsen with age as the tissues and supporting ligaments stretch and the breasts lose volume.

There are various degrees of breast ptosis, which start with mild sagging where most of the breast tissue underneath the nipple extends lower than the breast crease, but the nipple points outward and is above the fold. Second-degree breast sagging occurs when the nipple faces downward and sits below the breast crease, and grade three ptosis happens when the upper pole of the breast is also beneath the breast crease.

You can test your degree of breast ptosis at home with the “pencil test” for breast sagging. Place a pencil underneath one of your breasts in the crease. If the pencil stays in place when you let go, you likely have some degree of ptosis but pay attention to where the parts of your breasts are in relation to the pencil. For example, does the nipple and breast tissue hang beneath the pencil?

What Risks are Associated with Breast Lift?

Every surgery comes with risks, but you can reduce certain complications by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs procedures at an accredited surgical facility, such as Dr. Bounds. Breast lift risks can include anesthesia complications, changes in breast and nipple sensation, fluid accumulation, infection, poor healing, and others. Dr. Bounds will discuss breast lift risks during your consultation and answer your questions and concerns.

When Will I See My Breast Lift Results?

You will notice an elevated, perkier bust right after your mastopexy, but it takes time for post-operative swelling to dissipate and lines from the incisions sites to fade. Your final breast lift results will settle in a few months after your surgery.

Breast lift results are long-lasting but won’t stop the aging process or gravity from taking its toll. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight, you can enjoy your youthful breasts for longer.

Can Breast Implants Correct Breast Sag?

Dr. Bounds can evaluate your degree of breast ptosis. Some women with minimal breast sagging who want to increase their breast size may be able to correct mild ptosis with breast implants. However, this is on a case-by-case basis.
